by Liz Pearson and Mairlyn Smith Authors Liz Pearson and Mairlyn Smith form a winning combination–two vibrant women clearly committed to inspiring change in readers and helping them build confidence about their healthy food choices. In 2002 this collaborative pair proved they had the requisite know-how and experience by writing Canada’s best-selling Ultimate Healthy Eating Plan. Their newest book is an enhanced follow-up volume filled with new heart-healthy and diabetic-friendly recipes to complement revised versions of those published previously. This is more of a lifestyle handbook than a recipe book, however. It offers healthy reading at leisure and in the kitchen. Pearson and Smith are well known to Canadian cooking fans. Liz Pearson is the media-savvy motivating speaker and nutritionist known for her TV and magazine articles. As the driving force for the Pearson Institute of Nutrition, her goal is “to translate the often-confusing and ever-changing science of healthy eating into practical, commonsense advice that people can follow in their busy lives.” Home economist Mairlyn Smith is responsible for creating tempting recipes and meal plans that meet the nutritional needs of fast-paced families, and writes the “Whole Foods Kitchen” column for alive. (She even cooks with healthy frozen or canned ingredients that do not compromise nutritional value.) When nutrition and lifestyle books such as this one attempt to both educate (with nutritional information) and instruct (with recipes), nothing is gained unless the reader is motivated to read along and follow through. Too much scientific detail loses some readers and too many unfamiliar recipe ingredients cause others to shelve the book, never to be used. With Ultimate Foods we have perfect balance: a light-hearted, often humorous tone and plenty of information served up in manageable, bite-sized sections that engage without overwhelming. Even if all you do is commit to reading it, Ultimate Foods for Ultimate Health will affect your approach to achieving greater health. For those newly “health-curious” readers who want to know more about how fats, wine, chocolate, fish, vitamins, flax, and other natural foods figure into a healthy diet, this book will more than satisfy. Its easy-to-follow format will go a long way toward improving anyone’s health and lifestyle. Hélène Meurer is a writer and reviewer who self-prescribes regular doses of guilt-free dark chocolate as part of a healthy lifestyle in Victoria, BC. Source: alive #304, February 2008 |
