There are undeniable differences between the sexes that cannot be ignored. Men have their own unique set of health issues to consider, and it’s only recently that issues such as erectile dysfunction have been openly discussed. While there are many excellent natural health products for men, be sure to include this trio of supplements in your daily health program. You’ll find them in your local health store. Panax Ginseng Boosts Sexual Energy and Vitality It may not always be in the forefront of his mind, but most men admit that sexual thoughts are usually not far away. Yet at the end of a busy day, many men do not have the energy or desire to act on those thoughts. Thousands of years of use in Asian countries, especially China and Korea, have demonstrated Panax ginseng’s power to revitalize sexual energy. Acting not as stimulants, but as adaptogens, ginsenosides (the active agents in Panax ginseng), help minimize the negative effects of chronic stress while working to keep the overall system functioning normally. Panax is considered a general tonic but is especially recognized for its toning effect on the adrenal glands. Apparently the adrenals are not the only glands getting a ginseng tune-up! According to a research paper published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (May 2002) entitled “Ginseng, sex behavior, and nitric oxide,” ginseng can enhance libido and sexual performance through its direct effect on the central nervous system and gonadal tissues. Researchers concluded, “There is good evidence that ginsenosides can facilitate penile erection by directly inducing the vasodilation and relaxation of penile corpus cavernosum” with increasing evidence that nitric oxide plays a key role in the way ginsenosides function. This and other published studies point to ginseng in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction. Coenzyme Q10 for Hearts, Aging, and Fertility Still topping the charts for healthy hearts and healthy aging, CoQ10 is a must for men. As an antioxidant and cell energizer, it protects and strengthens the heart. Ongoing research is uncovering even more good reasons for supplementing with CoQ10. An Italian research team found that CoQ10 minimized the size of destructive lesions in the aorta, the body’s largest artery. They also discovered it improved seminal fluid integrity and sperm cell motility, translating to enhanced male fertility. Omega-3 Fatty Acids Fight Inflammation What do heart attacks, snoring, eczema, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, bursitis, and swollen gums all have in common? The answer is that these extremely diverse health conditions all include a significant common factor–inflammation. Omega-3 fats prevent the body’s production of prostaglandins that lead to inflammation. Recently, omega-3 has also been used to treat several psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases because of its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. These health-promoting fats are found most abundantly in oils from cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel, and herring), krill oil, flaxseeds, and flaxseed oil.
