HPV Vaccine: Caution Over the Hype
This fall BC joined the ranks of all the other Canadian provinces to offer the controversial human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to girls as young as nine. There's been tremendous hype surrounding Gardasil, which protects against some of the strains of the virus that cause cervical cancer.
Targeting Regression
Early diagnosis is vital in the treatment of cervical dysplasia, a condition in which abnormal, sometimes precancerous, cells develop on the lowest part of the uterus (the cervix). Regular Pap smears are the single most important habit a woman can adopt to detect dysplasia.
Cervical Cancer: A Preventable Killer
Thousands of women in North America die each year from invasive cervical cancer. The National Cancer Institute of Canada estimates that there were 1,450 new cases of invasive cervical cancer and 430 deaths in 2000.
