January is a perfect time to discover the cleansing and healing power of fresh, wholesome food full of live nutrients to support your digestion, lift your spirits and make you feel alive.

Sauerkraut is a fermented food known for its source of live, friendly bacteria that improves digestion and intestinal cleansing. The featured recipe, Sauerkraut Salad, also contains flax seed oil, which provides the valuable essential fatty acids needed for healthy skin and proper brain and nerve functioning, among many other functions.

More living foods such as raw vegetables and sprouts supply plenty of enzymes, the "spark plugs" that create energy in every single cell in our bodies. Try nutrition expert Sally Errey’s Winter Coleslaw and Sprouted Bean Spread for an enzyme energy boost.

For winter warmth, you can turn to another fermented food, miso soup, as well as comforting dumplings topped with a sauce filled with vitamins, minerals and live enzymes from dried fruits and fresh citrus juices.

Sally and I wish you a happy New Year and look forward to sharing many more healthy and delicious recipes with you.

Whole Wheat Dumplings With Dried Fruit Sauce

Often an increase in sugary, high-fat treats and increased alcohol consumption over the holiday season can leave your body systems sluggish and your liver trying to recuperate. These recipes contain powerful nutrients to help rebalance your system and revitalize your organs.

Winter Coleslaw

Filled with phytochemicals, this coleslaw will help cleanse your liver and protect you from cancer. Dillweed can be purchased in the produce section and freezes well for future use. The combination of dill, caraway and lemon adds a special tang. Use parsley if dill is not available. Serves two to four.

Sprouted Bean Spread

This tasty spread is a well-balanced meal! It provides the protein of nuts, seeds and beans, essential fats and a good vegetable serving. It is also filled with enzymes and beneficial microbes. Mixed bean sprouts are available in the produce section of most supermarkets. Makes about three cups (750 ml).

Mellow Miso Soup

Miso soup is the ultimate comfort food. Some people have even been able to wean themselves off coffee by drinking it regularly. Maybe it’s just a healthier way to keep your hands warm! Be sure to add the miso after removing the soup from heat. Serves two.
