That's right, more good news about fish oil! In a study of 4,513 sixty- to 80-year olds, researchers at the National Eye Institute found that eating two or more servings of omega-3-rich fish (such as salmon) decreased the risk of age related macular degeneration by one third. Why? Likely because the DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oil congregates in the eyes' light-sensing cells, increasing their efficacy and enabling people to see and perform fine tasks better. Another study, done at Harvard's Shepens Eye Research Institute, suggests that fish oil also decreases the risk of dry eye syndrome. Of 32,470 female participants in the study, those who ate two servings of fish per week had an 18 per cent lower risk of dry eye syndrome. Eating five or six servings per week lowered the risk even further, to 66 per cent! What's important to note here is that both studies used actual servings of fish, rather than fish oil supplements. webmd.com
