| At 40 I find that I am losing my hair—it seems to be coming out in handfuls. I am terrified I will be bald in a few months; what can I do to improve this situation? |

It is natural to lose some hair on a daily basis; this is part of the natural hair renewal process. For a combination of reasons, including hormonal changes, high stress levels, thyroid irregularities, certain medications, smoking, diet, and genetics, hair roots can eventually begin to clog and weaken, resulting in thinning hair, balding, and eventually no hair growth at all.
Hair is mostly made from a fibrous protein called keratin. Healthy hair growth depends on a good supply of nutrient-rich blood to the scalp and hair follicles.
Nutrients such as essential fatty acids (omega-3 and -6) help to improve circulation and alleviate dry, scaly skin, so supplementing with a combination of borage, flax, and fish oils may help alleviate any hair loss caused by skin conditions. Ensure your diet is rich in fatty fish such as wild salmon, tuna, and mackerel, along with green leafy vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
Also essential for healthy skin and hair growth are vitamins and minerals; be sure your diet is rich in fruits and vegetables, and supplement with a daily multivitamin. Vitamins A, E, C, biotin, B3, B6, and B12 may help to produce keratin and sebum, our hair’s natural oil, to prevent hair loss.
Essential oils such as camomile, rosemary, and sage may help to strengthen the capillaries that supply blood to the scalp and hair follicles and improve elasticity, and may provide benefits for skin and scalp disorders. Mix these essential oils with a nourishing carrier such as avocado oil and massage into the scalp for at least ten minutes to provide a soothing treatment. |

| There's a certain shampoo and conditioner that helps getting hair to grow back. It's pretty expensive but it's proven to help. It's all made of biodegradable products and natural. If you want more info you can contact me at ncys1@aol.com. |

Hi! I am 22 years old, and have been losing a lot of hair since I am 10 years old. Yes I do have a thyroid problem, but it has been regulated since I am 13 years old. The doctors told me it would take time for my hair to grow back. but at 22 I am still loosing a lot of hair. I don,t want to be bald at age 25! Please, help me. I was followed by a Naturopath - but i had to stop. Because of financial issues. She told me it was related to my hormones and emotions. But, i am sure htere are foods that can help me, but I don,t know what. As well as little things, such as essential oils and etc.
From a sincere reader of Alive and a young beleiver in natural stuff.

| If it is hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) almost nothing is going to help. The exceptions are hair transplantation and medications like propecia or rogaine. At least, they are clinically proven to work. However, their effects last only while you take the medication. If you stop taking them, the hair loss will return. |

I found myself with thinning hair and fingernail loss after following a 98% raw-food diet for about 7 months that brought me down to a very dangerous weight. When switching back to the vegan lifestyle I used to have before the raw-food diet, I encouraged hair and nail growth by consuming a lot of wheatgerm (about 3 tablespoons per day) and natural unsulphured molasses. Wheat germ is great on cereal, salad, smoothies, yogourt, etc. Essential fats are also important.
Good luck,

Hello friends
here i want to inform you about life cycle of hair...
he normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 6 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter (less than half an inch) per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.
It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) hair loss. Hair loss of this type can affect men, women and children. |
