| My mother was told to take mineral cell salts. What are they good for, and how do they work? |

Cells keep our bodies in balance by absorbing and excreting nutrients as part of their normal daily function.
The cell’s ability to balance the amount of minerals within the body is often challenged by the lack of nutrients and presence of chemicals in the standard North American diet. Environmental toxins and emotional stress also cause our bodies to lose substantial amounts of minerals.
As mineral reserves are depleted, we lose our ability to handle the toxic overload. This places an additional burden on the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin. Unable to eliminate toxins from the body effectively, toxins circulate and finally become embedded in tissues. Over the years the lack of alkalizing minerals allows the body to become so acidic that it often cannot repair itself. Eventually, the cells start to malfunction, and if this is not corrected in time, it can lead to disease.
Cell salts may be used for a number of conditions, including alleviating muscle cramps (Mag Phos), gout (Nat Phos and Nat Sulph), growing pains (Calc Phos), or supplying energy recovery for athletes (Ferr Phos). Doses vary; consult with a health practitioner familiar with cell salts.
Since minerals are the foundation of proper cell function, it is important to reintroduce the correct minerals in order to rebalance the malfunctions that have begun. Homeopathically prepared mineral cell salts (also known as tissue salts) are easily assimilated by the body.
A regular regimen of the 12-in-1 combination tissue salts (generally 12 to 16 quick-dissolving tabs in a 1 L/4-cup water bottle) can help cells absorb nutrients properly and help correct metabolism. |

Biochemic cell salts are remedies based on inorganic salts. Although highly diluted, they are not classed as homeopathic remedies, as they are not purported to act according to the "like cures like" principle of homeopathy. Inorganic salts were first used as homeopathic remedies by Samuel Hahnemann, and further developed by Dr. Willhelm Heinrich Schüssler (1821-1898) who identified 12 different salts in human tissue, and concluded that they are important mineral constitiuents that are present in human cells. He also stated that if an imbalance were to occur, sickness may follow. This is in line with current medical knowledge. He ascribed a specific purpose to each one of the 12 salts, based on his understading of their biochemical purpose. However, since his original work, the understanding of the role of minerals in the body has undergone great advances, making his disease and deficiency model obsolete.
These days, tissue salts are prescribed as tablets, made up with lactose powder in a manner similar to homeopathic products: The salt is ground with lactose powder in a ratio of 1:9, and this mixture is then ground with fresh lactose, again in a 1:9 ratio. This process is repeated six times, yielding a 1 000 000 to 1 dilution. Because of this dilution, tissue salts are generally prescribed at dosages that are too low to have any detectable effect on the levels of the minerals and electrolytes involved, and no well-designed clinical trials have ever shown an effect other than placebo from tissue salts. |

There are a number of excellent books on the subject of
cell salts. From some personal experience I have found them to be very effective. It is my contention that the body can only be healthy and function properly if the components that it needs are being constantly supplied. That is why it is constantly drummed into us that we need to eat correctly. Well the manner in which food is produced using massive amounts of fertilizer does not make for food containing the vitamins and minerals we would expect from it. Hence the need for supplements such as cell/tissue salts. Any sensible person would know that this is not the whole answer but without the correct proportion of minerals (cell/tissue salts) the body tissues cannot function as they should which must surely eventually lead to ill health. |
