Gym Etiquette for Beginners

Hitting the gym for your new year’s resolutions? Make sure you follow proper gym etiquette!

’Tis the season for renewed motivation to become healthier. If you’ve resolved to hit the gym and get fit, congratulations! But if working out at a gym is new to you, make sure you know and follow these rules of proper gym etiquette to make it a great experience for everyone.

Sharing is caring
Perhaps the biggest thing to keep in mind is to be respectful of the people around you. This means not hogging any piece of equipment, the shower, or the water fountain. It also means not to idle between your exercises by resting on a machine. When you’re not using the equipment, you shouldn’t be on the equipment. Many gyms also have time limits posted, so be aware of those.

Go scent-free
Although wearing deodorant is important, many gyms have strict scent-free policies for those who are environmentally sensitive. In short: wear deodorant, skip the perfume.

Clean up after yourself
There’s nothing more “ewww!”-inducing than touching a piece of equipment covered in someone else’s sweat. Bring a towel and clean up after your workout, or use a spray and paper towel provided by the gym.

Cleaning up after yourself also means to take any weights off barbells (be respectful of people who can’t lift as much as you) and returning your free weights, mats, and other equipment to where they’re stored.

Shhh!
Many gyms are imposing restrictions on cell phones. While some people might enjoy listening in on your juicy conversation, others will find it annoying and interruptive. And although chatting with fellow exercisers is fine, causing them to slow down or ruining their concentration is not. Last but not least, don’t chat during group classes!

Read the rules
Many gyms have rules posted on the wall or printed in a brochure. While they may include the tips above, some gyms have different rules, so make sure to familiarize yourself with them beforehand.
