Tomorrow, Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm is Earth Hour. Millions of people, governments, and businesses around the world will be turning off their lights in support of taking urgent action on climate change.

Canadians are enthusiastic Earth Hour supporters. Did you know that

  • more than 15 million Canadians take part in Earth Hour?
  • Toronto was the first city to sign up for Earth Hour in 2008, after Earth Hour’s debut in Sydney, Australia in 2007?

Vancouver: Global Earth Hour Capital

Congratulations to Vancouver, BC, for being named Global Earth Hour Capital! Vancouver was recognized for its innovative actions on climate change and its dedication to creating a sustainable, vibrant urban environment.

Sixty-eight cities from Canada, the United States, Italy, India, Norway, and Sweden participated in World Wildlife Federation’s City Challenge. The 2013 challenge will involve even more countries.

Vancouver also garnered the highest number of online votes, and was named the People’s Choice winner.

NHL’s climate change goal

Even the National Hockey League (NHL) is getting in on the action with NHL Green. On Saturday evening, NHL headquarters in New York and all 30 NHL arenas will power down non-essential lighting.

The Vancouver Canucks will be powering down exterior LED lights and signage on Rogers Arena, as well as the interior lighting, heating, and ventilation systems; and their ice plant.

What’s an hour? Take the pledge to turn off your lights at the World Wildlife Federation’s website, and join millions of like-minded people around the world who are taking action against climate change.
