Explore Hypnosis on World Hypnotism Day

Share

While hypnosis is growing in popularity, many myths still abound. World Hypnotism Day is a great time to learn more about it.

Today is World Hypnotism Day! To many people the word hypnotism conjures up images of magician-like stage hypnotists making audience members cluck like chickens. Or people harnessing the power of the mind to bend spoons.

Why celebrate World Hypnotism Day?

The goal of World Hypnotism Day is to remove the myths and misconceptions about hypnosis and promote its benefits. Professionally trained hypnotists and hypnotherapy clinics all over the world are participating in today’s celebration.

“People have been fascinated with hypnosis since its inception,” says Luke Chao, hypnotherapist and founder of the Morpheus Clinic. “Both Hollywood and stage hypnotists have played up this fascination for entertainment purposes. Unfortunately, entertainment doesn't completely overlap with reality.”

To help debunk the myths about hypnosis, the Morpheus Clinic conducted in-person surveys with 166 people last fall. While public awareness of hypnosis is improving, some myths die hard.

Myth

A hypnotized person can be forced to reveal their secrets.

Reality

A hypnotized person doesn’t give up control. A hypnotist can’t make you do something you don’t want to do or say something you don’t want to reveal.

Myth

A hypnotized person isn’t aware of what’s happening around them.

Reality

A hypnotized person is in a state of deep relaxation in which he or she remains aware of what’s going on at all times.

Myth

Not everyone can be hypnotized.

Reality

Almost anyone can be hypnotized to some degree. By focusing, suspending critical thinking, and using their imagination, people can allow themselves to be hypnotized.

Benefits of Hypnosis

Trained hypnotherapists use scientifically valid, results-oriented, relevant techniques to help clients overcome a variety of issues, including

  • quitting smoking
