Lemon verbena (aloysia triphylla) is a positive, uplifting oil–a splash of sunshine for the rainy skies of November. It has a light, lemony-fresh scent with herbaceous undertones. This essential oil is frequently subject to adulteration with spanish verbena or another lemony lower-cost oil such as lemongrass or citronella, so make sure the oil is high quality in order to achieve the desired results. Like citrus oils, verbena might cause skin photosensitivity or may irritate sensitive skin.

To use lemon verbena with a pot-pourri burner, try combining it with essential oils of fir and spearmint for a fresh and cleansing atmosphere that will brighten the day.

The oil also works well on stress-related conditions, helping to put life into perspective. Fears and anxieties are calmed while mental alertness is improved. Combining verbena with other oils can help to reduce insomnia, hyperactivity, ADD and ADHD (attention deficit and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders) as it is cosidered a sedative which helps with stress and anxiety.

Most skin types will experience improved texture with this oil (be careful of extremely sensitive skin). Acne, acne rosacea, irritated and inflamed skin, rashes and hives are all helped with lemon verbena. It’s considered to be a stomachic and digestive stimulant. Better digestive functioning (including the liver) helps the skin. Dry skin and scalp irritations are also soothed. Combine verbena with an unscented or complimentary scented shower cream or gel for a fresh and invigorating wake-up to your morning.
