US Kids to Feed on Irradiated Meats

Sweet lunchboxes, shiny apples… and irradiated meats? Some 28 million American schoolchildren may be chomping on irradiated hamburger by 2004. The US Department of Agriculture just approved irradiated food products into the school lunch program, much to the dismay of consumer groups. During irradiation, food products are exposed to ionizing radiation to extend shelf-life and kill insects, fungi and bacteria. Proponents claim it is safe and has benefit. Critics hold that it doesn't address the true causes of E. coli and salmonella contamination-namely, poor food handling and unsanitary manufacturing practices. Worse, some evidence suggests irradiated food isn't safe for consumption. Canada is facing its own irradiation issues, with Health Canada considering expanding its list of allowable irradiated products. If you're concerned, check out citizen.org, cnp.ca, sierraclub.ca.
