October 21st is Apple Day. Apples … Eve used one as the ultimate fruit of temptation and the wicked queen attempted to poison Snow White with a shiny red one. On a more positive note, apples are the classic teacher’s gift too.

Of course, apples are ultimately associated with health. We’re all familiar with the saying, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Did you know there may be a lot of truth to that old wives’ tale?

A fruit that’s eaten by many cultures around the world, the apple is an excellent source of antioxidants. Antioxidants help to reduce oxidative stress which can lead to cancer and cardiovascular disease. Apples also contain flavonoids, and are one of the main sources of these phytochemicals in North American diets. Studies have shown that a high intake of flavonoids can lead to a decreased risk of mortality.

Apple research has produced a large body of evidence to support the health benefits of this popular fruit. Eating apples regularly can result in:

  • a decreased risk of asthma and bronchial hypersensitivity
  • a lower risk of type 2 diabetes

  • a decrease in plasma and liver cholesterol, and triglycerides
  • a decreased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease
