Protecting Our Kids From Diabetes

Easy lifestyle changes can make the difference

Share

The last two decades have seen an increase in the number of children and teenagers who are at risk or have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Far from a life sentence, the risk of insulin resistance, one of the key prediabetes symptoms, can be managed by making a few lifestyle changes that can be adopted by the whole family for everyone’s benefit:

  • Get outside daily for walks, hikes, or bike rides.
  • Colour your plates with wholesome foods and spices (turmeric has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes).
  • Swap processed food for fibre and phytochemical-rich snacks and treats that will help keep blood sugar levels balanced.
  • Replace sugary drinks (including fruit juices) with water.
