The number of products in the immune support aisle of the health food store can make even the most savvy shopper's head spin. When in doubt about what products to choose, a good rule of thumb is to turn to the research. The best immune support products should prove in clinical research how much they bolster the immune system's T-cells, B-cells and natural killer cells. Natural killer cells are the body's first defence; like warriors in battle, they seek out and destroy all noxious organisms. B-cells make antibodies, which provide long-term immunity, and T-cells kill disease-causing organisms directly. Optimal natural killer cell activity and T- and B-cell counts are required to effectively fight cancer and infections.
One nutrient with notable research backing its immune support abilities is MGN-3, which is made from rice bran extract and shiitake mushroom enzymes. Clinical research by Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum demonstrates that MGN-3 triples natural killer cell activity and doubles B- and T-cell counts. Research also shows that MGN-3 effectively boosts the immune system, even in seriously immuno-compromised and cancer patients.
A new study presented at the third annual meeting of the Japanese Society for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Treatment found that MGN-3 increased survival rates in end-stage cancer patients. In this study, 109 patients who took three grams of MGN-3 daily were 60 per cent more likely to survive the duration of the 18-month study as compared to 96 patients who did not take MGN-3. It was also found that MGN-3 significantly increased natural killer cell activity in cancer patients, which correlated with better survival rates.
When taken as directed, MGN-3 provides effective immune support and is a valuable nutrient in the fight against disease.
