Men's Skin Care Spotlight: Kakadu Plum

Have you heard of the kakadu plum? Learn about this amazing skin care ingredient, and why it’s popping up in skin care products for men.

At alive, we know that skin care isn’t reserved to women only. But we also know that men sometimes neglect their skin care routines. That’s why we’re doing a series of blog posts showcasing three of the top skin care ingredients—for men. Today’s blog post shines the spotlight on kakadu plum.

Kakadu—what?

If you’re already familiar with kakadu plum, give yourself a pat on the back. But if you’re not, don’t worry—it’s only now beginning to explode into the skin care market.

Kakadu plum is considered a superfruit, which means that it’s a mighty little fruit packed full of nutrients. Found in Australia growing in areas other trees aren’t able to survive, it’s been used traditionally by the indigenous Australian people for thousands of years as a natural remedy—and for good reason.

Kakadu plum nutrients

Kakadu plum is packed with antioxidants, including gallic acid and egallic acid. The role of antioxidants in the body is to help reduce inflammation and help bind to harmful free radicals, fighting cell damage.

Quick—what’s the world’s highest natural source of vitamin C? Oranges? Camu camu berry? Rosehips? Nope, nope, and nope. Kakadu plum has the highest concentration of vitamin C (which also acts as powerful antioxidant) discovered so far.

The kakadu plum also contains other nutrients, including lutein, vitamin E, vitamin B9 (folate), and even more types of antioxidants. In fact, it’s thought to contain more than 50 various identifiable health-promoting compounds.

Kakadu plum in skin care products

In skin care products, topical antioxidants are thought to help repair skin damage caused by the sun or aging, and may help stimulate collagen production while minimizing the look of fine lines or scars. Who couldn’t use that?

Plus, gallic acid has astringent, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties, and egallic acid is thought to have antibacterial properties. All of these things make kakadu plum a force to be reckoned with in skin care products.

Look for kakadu plum as an ingredient in natural men’s skin care products found at natural health retailers, including cleansers, exfoliants, toners, masques, serums, and cremes and moisturizing lotions.
