Vacation Without the Spread

Avoid the pounds

Vacations are a time to kick back, soak up the rays, and unfortunately, sometimes gain weight. It's easy to forget about your healthy lifestyle and just give in.

Vacations are often a time to kick back, soak up the rays, and unfortunately, sometimes gain weight. When you’re on a tropical cruise or frolicking between caf'es in Provence, it’s much too easy to forget about your commitment to a healthy lifestyle and just give in to your new surroundings.

After a relaxed week or two of diddly-squat for physical exertion and too much “oh, I’ll just have a little of this and a little of that,” it’s no surprise that you return home unable to do up that top button.

But it is possible to indulge in the vacation fudge without putting on the vacation pudge. So before you order another margarita at the swim-up bar, take heed of these simple strategies for a healthy vacation.

Take a risk

Instead of putting a lazy cruise on your plastic, try an adventure holiday. There are numerous outfitters ready to take open-minded travellers through remote jungles, over high mountain passes, and along glacier-studded waterways. Sure, 10 straight days of hiking can be challenging, but you’re rewarded with a great sense of accomplishment and a leaner physique that might turn heads back at the office. Plus all that extra activity will allow you to sneak a few extra bites of sinful treats without paying the toll later.

Be multitalented

Choose a vacation location that offers a wide diversity of outdoor activities such as kayaking, cycling, hiking, and rock climbing within easy reach. Don’t forget your camera and your SPF!

Find the local yokel

Markets can be a great way to scoop up healthy and exotic local offerings that are much lower in harmful fats and calories than what is offered in many restaurants and snack bars. This is a wonderful way to support the local farmers in the area you’re visiting.

Be prepared

Fresh and dried fruit and nuts are readily available in most countries and can go a long way toward satisfying a snack attack. Bring some wholesome energy bars from home for those times when you’re in a pinch and crave something familiar.

Avoid restaurant meltdown

Travelling often means eating out for most, if not all, of your meals. One poor menu choice after another is sure to put an extra notch on your belt. Keep it simple by opting more often for baked, grilled, or broiled items as opposed to the creamy, fried, and crispy varieties.

Search the menu for as many vegetables as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make special requests. Deprivation is no fun when you’re away, so the name of the game is moderation. A smart option is to find accommodation that has cooking facilities, allowing you to prepare more of your own meals.

Don’t be a lush

Alternate your intake of alcoholic drinks with non-calorie beverages so that you stay hydrated and consume fewer calories. The sugar calories in those poolside kaleidoscope drinks can really add up. Consider choosing light beers and dry wines. Mix your drinks with club soda.

Get fit digs

When reviewing hotels, consider selecting one with on-site fitness facilities. While you shouldn’t spend a sunny day in the Rocky Mountains on an indoor treadmill, this perk can allow you to get a quick daybreak pump before it’s time to sightsee. It also lets you sweat it up on those days when Mother Nature is not co-operating.

Take a stroll

Bring a good pair of walking shoes and hit the pavement. Instead of relying on motorized locomotion, use your own two feet to wander through cities and villages. You’ll knock off a bunch more calories and possibly meet some interesting locals along the way.
