Just Add Water

Share

Water, water everywhere - and so many possibilities to spruce up today’s helpings of hydration.

When I’m dripping with sweat after a workout, nothing tastes sweeter than a sip (or guzzle) of water. Other times, not so much. I’ll admit: water loses some of its wow factor when I’m sitting at a desk, driving, or eating dinner.

Lattes or lemonade seem prettier and more decadent … but sadly, our bodies don’t consist of 60 percent sugary steamed milk. Nope—it’s water that makes up more than half our body weight, and healthy hydration helps keep us energized and free of toxins.

Most people know the eight-cups-a-day rule, but the Institute of Medicine recommends that men drink about 13 cups of water per day; women can get away with just nine. Fortunately for those of us who need a little pep in our water to make it more palatable, just about anything fruity can add pizzazz.

Flavour with fresh or frozen fruit

It’s so simple, but a few strawberry or orange slices and a splash of lemon juice make so much difference. Sprinkle grated lemon rind on your water for a more decorative display. If you’re still craving some sweetness, consider filling your glass with three-quarters water and one-quarter 100 percent fruit juice.

Tea it up

For maximum hydration, drink caffeine-free herbal teas such as rooibos or fruit infusions rather than green and black varieties. I drink hot tea year-round, but maybe chilled drinks are more your thing in the summer? For a quick iced tea, simply brew a hot cup of herbal tea, leaving the tea bag (or leaves) in a little longer than usual to strengthen the flavour. Pour your tea into a glass that’s three-quarters full of ice cubes—then watch them melt, and enjoy!

Sip spa water

Feeling extra luxurious? With a bit of a makeover, water can also be a decadent treat—perfect for lounging by the pool, relaxing with a good book, or impressing friends with your creativity.
