The colour red is synonymous with Valentine’s Day. But instead of falling back on the predictable bouquet of roses or heart-shaped box of chocolates, why not fill your loved ones’ bellies with delicious and nutritious red-themed dishes that will indeed tug at their heart strings.
A day of eating red is not only fetching to the eye. Many of Mother Nature’s rosy foods are considered nutritional superstars. For instance, take raspberries, which are rich in vitamin C and dietary fibre. Fitting for the day, research suggests higher intakes of fibre can offer protection from heart disease.
Dig deep for beets and you’ll get a healthy dose of folate, a B vitamin associated with a lower risk for hypertension.
Up-and-coming red quinoa is supercharged with protein, fibre, phosphorus, and magnesium. A raft of studies has demonstrated that magnesium is an ally in the battle against diabetes.
